Checking Your Oil

It is important to check your engine oil frequently. To do this, make sure that the motor is cold, and that the car is on a level surface. Withdraw the oil dipstick, wipe it clean with a clean rag, then re-insert it. Pull it out again and check the oil level against the marks on the stick. It should be at the full mark and the color should be brown and transparent.

If the level of the oil is below full is would be advisable to top it up. Make sure to use the same type of oil that is currently in the car, and remove the cap from the crankcase. Pour a bit of oil into the case and allowing some time for the oil to percolate into the case, check the oil level again. Be careful not to overfill the motor.

If the color of the oil is black and opaque, then its time to change your oil. Old motor oil loses its viscosity and accumulates residues that can harm your engine. Changing your car's oil is not very difficult and is something every car owner should know how to do. Simply drain the oil from the car, either by removing the drain plug under the motor or via the oil filter. Use a pan to collect the oil until it has all drained from the car, then replace the plug or insert a new filter. Next, consult your owner's manual to see how many quarts of oil your car needs and fill from the crankcase as if you were topping it up. Love your car, and your car will love you.
